Chief of Staff of the Navy presides over closing of VNF Annual Training Camp in Welisara

In a dignified sequence, the inspection of divisions of the Volunteer Naval Force (VNF) Annual Training Camp was held at the parade ground of SLNS Lanka in Welisara on 21st September 2023. At the invitation of the Commandant VNF, Rear Admiral Saman Perera and Commanding Officer VNF, Commodore Nimal Wasantha, the occasion was graced by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Jayantha Kularatne, as the Chief Guest.

The Volunteer Naval Force’s distinctive tradition involves hosting the Annual Training Camp and inspection of divisions, which serve to enhance the professional skills and knowledge of its naval personnel. Commenced on 04th September 2023, the Annual Training Camp drew to a close on 21st September, following the effective conclusion of training programmes, which have equipped VNF personnel with the necessary theoretical and practical skills for their roles in the Navy. The occasion was also made more colourful with a dazzling cultural show which marked the end of the proceedings of VNF Annual Training Camp 2023.

Speaking to the esteemed audience, Rear Admiral Jayantha Kularatne expressed his honour at being present for this significant event as the Chief Guest. He mentioned that he was filling in for the Commander of the Navy, who is currently away on official commitment. He also said that the VNF has a longstanding tradition involving the VNF Annual Training Camp and inspection divisions, which are distinct and significant aspects of the VNF. In response to the requirements of national security and nation building, the VNF has significantly expanded its personnel. It initially began with 24 officers and 121 sailors but has since grown substantially, now boasting 397 officers and 11,080 sailors. This expansion has enabled them to make valuable professional contributions across various domains, ensuring they effectively fulfill Navy's responsibilities, he further opined.

He seized this moment to pay a heartfelt tribute to the VNF personnel who bravely gave their lives or suffered injuries in defence of the motherland's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally, he extended his sincere appreciation to the families of these dedicated individuals. The Chief of Staff additionally mentioned that this Annual Training Camp will play a significant role in harnessing the expertise and abilities of the civilian sector to enhance the Navy's effectiveness as well as to enhance practical training and comprehension to cultivate disciplined and proficient naval personnel.

Director Generals of the Navy, Flag Rank officers, senior officers from the Navy Headquarters and Western Naval Command and a host of naval personnel were also present on this occasion.
