Commander of the Navy attends Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony was held under the patronage of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka, Honourable Anura Kumara Dissanayake, at Cenotaph War Memorial in Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo today (24th November 2024). The event, which solemnly commemorated the sacrifices of war veterans from World War I and II, as well as those who laid down their lives in service of Sri Lanka since gaining independence, was also attended by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera.
The dignified event was organized by Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association. During the event, Honourable President made floral tributes at the Cenotaph War Memorial first and the gesture was reciprocated by Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), Chief of Defence Staff, General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, diplomatic corps, senior tri-service officers, retired tri-service commanders, retired tri-service personnel and distinguished invitees.
In parallel with the main ceremony, the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Navy Headquarters was held under the patronage of the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Kanchana Banagoda. Upholding this cherished military tradition, the ceremony was attended by officers and sailors from Navy Headquarters and SLNS Parakrama.
Simultaneously, similar ceremonies were held across all Naval Commands, led by Area Commanders and Deputy Area Commanders. Naval personnel from ships and establishments gathered at War Memorials in Welisara and the Northern, Eastern, Western, North Central, Southeastern, Northwestern, and Southern Naval Commands to pay heartfelt tributes to war veterans.
