Navy bids adieu to Rear Admiral Thushara Karunatunga
The Sri Lanka Navy on 03 Apr 25 bade farewell to Rear Admiral Thushara Karunatunga who relinquished his duties to which he was committed over the past 33 years in the Sri Lanka Navy.
The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, along with the Board of Management of the Sri Lanka Navy, extended best wishes to the retiring senior officer who is celebrating his 55th birthday on 03 Apr 25. Thereupon, Rear Admiral Karunatunga was accorded a Guard of Honour in accordance with naval traditions. As the customary event drew to a close, fellow naval officers made their formal farewells to the retiring senior officer, before he was sent off in a motorcade amidst the cheers of naval personnel.
Rear Admiral Thushara Karunatunga joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet of the 09th intake of then General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy in 1991. Throughout his distinguished naval career, the flag rank officer had the privilege of holding prestigious commanding positions on board ships, craft and at establishments. Additionally, he has held several other key appointments throughout his career, including as a Directing Staff member (Naval Wing) at Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC), Training Commander SLNS Nipuna, Command Operations Officer (South), Deputy Director Naval Administration, Counselor (Defence) to Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi, Director Naval Welfare, Chief Instructor at DSCSC, Director General (Naval and Air Operations) at the Office of Chief of Defence Staff and Commander Southeastern and Northern Naval Areas.
