Sri Lanka Navy receives advanced radiological and chemical detection equipment from Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration
Enhancing its technical capabilities in radiation detection at port entry points and within the nation’s territorial waters, the Sri Lanka Navy received the initial major consignment of equipment under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Department of Energy’s Office of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the United States. The symbolic handover of equipment was held at the Navy Headquarters today (15 May 25), attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, H.E. Julie Chung and Commander of the Navy.
The advanced equipment, along with protective gear, will substantially boost the CBRN First Response Unit of the Sri Lanka Navy’s capacity to detect and respond to nuclear, radiological, and chemical threats effectively.
This contribution represents a key milestone in bilateral defence cooperation, reflecting the enduring friendship and shared strategic interests between the two countries. Senior Advisor at the NNSA, Mr. Michael Connor, officials from the U.S. Embassy in Colombo and Director General Engineering, Rear Admiral Hasantha Dassanaike were present on this occasion.
