Navy pitches in with marine conservation efforts near Pigeon Island

In a significant step toward preserving Sri Lanka’s marine biodiversity, the Sri Lanka Navy partnered with the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat to bolster conservation efforts on 02 Jun 25 in the Pigeon Island area off the coast of Trincomalee. This special initiative, held in line with World Environment Day and the Sri Lanka Navy enabled vital diving assistance for this worthwhile endeavour.

As a key partner of the “Clean Sri Lanka” national initiative, the Sri Lanka Navy often pitches in with coastal conservation programmes, to realize the aspiration of “A Beautiful Beach - An Attractive Tourist Destination”.

The recent initiative aimed to enhance marine safety and promote a healthier ocean environment by removing debris and pollutants from the seabed near the Pigeon Island. This magnanimous effort was augmented by a number of government and non governmental organisations in their renewed commitment to safeguarding Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems.

Furthermore, as part of the Clean Sri Lanka National Project, this initiative was notable as the first instance where the Navy participated in a community-driven effort to clean the coral ecosystem.
