World Oceans Day 2025 national celebrations make splash at Port City, Colombo
A national initiative to raise public awareness about the ocean’s vital environmental and economic significance and the urgent need to safeguard it for future generations was held on 08 Jun 25 at Colombo Port City in observance of World Oceans Day.
Recognizing the ocean as the cradle of life and a critical determinant of Earth’s survival, the United Nations has designated 08 Jun as World Oceans Day to highlight the damaging effects of human activity on marine biodiversity. This year’s theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” underscores the importance of preserving this invaluable resource.
The national event emphasized Sri Lanka’s global pledge as an island nation to protect its marine wealth. Given that the country’s ocean territory is eight times larger than its landmass, the programme highlighted issues of IUU fishing and stressed the need to prevent ocean pollution caused by human actions to ensure sustainable marine resources for posterity.
A key concern addressed was the growing threat of non-biodegradable waste, particularly plastic and polythene from industrial and household sources. These pollutants enter the ocean through rivers and streams, eventually breaking down into microplastics that infiltrate the food chain, posing serious long-term health risks to humans.
The event also showcased the Sri Lanka Navy’s extensive efforts and Naval Social Responsibility initiatives in conserving marine biodiversity. Rear Admiral Buddhika Liyanagamage, the Director General Operations, attended the programme, highlighting the Navy’s commitment to marine protection.
Aligned with the government’s vision of “A Sustainable Biotic World An Evergreen Life”, the Navy remains dedicated to ensuring the sustainable future of Sri Lanka’s oceans and coastal zones. Through collaborative efforts with government and non-governmental organizations, the Navy continues to engage in community service and empowerment programmes aimed at preserving marine biodiversity.
