Navy leads charge with conservation efforts celebrating World Environment Day
Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, the Sri Lanka Navy lent its helping hand to a series of impactful environmental initiatives in observance of World Environment Day 2025. Held on 04 and 05 June 25 in the Eastern, Northern and Southeastern Naval Commands, these efforts underscored the Navy’s dedication to the government’s vision of nurturing ‘A Sustainable Biotic World – An Evergreen Life’.
Thus, SLNS Perakumba in the Eastern Naval Command joined hands with the Divisional Secretariat of Trincomalee as well as Muthur and Sampool Police stations to plant coconut saplings in Sudeikuda area of Muthur.
Another key highlight of the initiatives was the herbal planting programme held at SLNS Uththara in the Northern Naval Command, conducted in collaboration with Link Natural Products (Pvt) Ltd. The initiative aimed to promote sustainable herbal cultivation and biodiversity preservation. Expanding their green drive, naval personnel from SLNS Welusumana, Elara, Gotaimbara, Kanchadewa, Agbo, and Wasabha planted coconut and cashew saplings across several islands, including Mandativu, Kareinagar, Pungututivu, Kayts, Madagal, and Delft. These efforts are expected to enhance green cover and provide long-term benefits to coastal communities.
In a collaborative effort, SLNS Mahanaga and Deeghayu of the Southeastern Naval Command joined forces with the Arugam Bay Police Special Task Force, the Marine Environment Protection Authority, the Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat, and the Coastal Conservation Department to restore Arugam Bay's scenic beauty. The initiative focused on clearing scattered waste from the beach and ensuring its eco-friendly disposal.
