Navy takes lead with officials and fishing communities in Trincomalee to address illegal fishing activities
The Navy hosted an awareness programme on 13 Jun 25, aimed at shedding light on the damaging effects of illegal fishing, particularly in the Eastern Province. The initiative highlighted threats to marine biodiversity, tourism and the well-being of future generation. The event was presided over by the Commander Eastern Naval Area, along with regional law enforcement authorities and leaders of local fishermen's societies.
In the wake of recent increasing illegal fishing activities in the Eastern seas of Sri Lanka, the event focused on educating fishing communities on the consequences of endangering marine environment, livelihood of legitimate fishermen, tourism industry and sustainable fishing.
During the programme it was underscored that failure to address illegal fishing effectively may result in serious long-term repercussions. Meanwhile, the fishing community was educated about current legal framework with regard to illegal fishing practices. Fishermen's groups have also called on the Navy and concerned authorities to crack down on those using explosives for illegal fishing. Furthermore, the concerns of law-abiding fishermen were discussed at length, and special attention was paid to lay the groundwork for taking steps to resolve their problems.
The District Secretary of Trincomalee, senior naval officers from the Eastern Naval Command, Deputy Inspector General of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police Trincomalee, Assistant Director of Fisheries Trincomalee, Fisheries Inspectors, General Manager of the Tourism Bureau Eastern Area, Explosive Controller in Trincomalee and fishermen representing fishing societies were present on this occasion.
