Commander of the Navy visits Southeastern Naval Command reinforcing defence priorities
The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda conducted an official three-day visit to the Southeastern Naval Command from 20 to 22 Jun 25. During this visit, he inspected key operational preparedness, reviewed administrative functions, assessed ongoing infrastructure projects and evaluated the progress of welfare initiatives for naval personnel.
Upon his arrival, Vice Admiral Banagoda was received by the Commander Southeastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Harsha De Silva. Following his visit to SLNS Mahanaga, the Navy Chief delivered an address to a gathering of naval personnel, emphasizing the Navy’s strategic role and operational objectives.
The Commander emphasized the Navy’s role in providing safety and necessary support for devotees undertaking the sacred Jaffna to Katharagama foot pilgrimage through the Southeastern Naval Command. Highlighting the Navy’s critical role in protecting people of the country, he reiterated its responsibility in upholding national security. The address also underscored the importance of nurturing a stable ocean region to achieve Sri Lanka’s maritime aspirations.
Discipline was another central aspect in the speech, with the Commander urging all personnel to adhere to strict professional standards. He called on seniors to guide their juniors at all times, fostering a culture of mentorship and responsibility. Reminding naval personnel of their duty to the public, the Commander stated that serving the people is the utmost duty. Looking ahead, Vice Admiral Banagoda urged naval personnel to continuously enhance their knowledge and skills to meet evolving challenges. He emphasized the importance of training and adaptability in maintaining operational readiness.
As part of this visit, the Commander of the Navy also called at SLNS Deegayu as well as Naval Detachments belonging to SLNS Mahanaga and Deegayu. The visit also served as an opportunity to assess security measures of those establishments and provide guidance on future strategic priorities as well as welfare initiatives and infrastructure projects currently underway.
