Galle Dialogue Session 2 steers discussions on Maritime Governance under Changing Dynamics

The second session of the 12th Galle Dialogue International Maritime Conference, was held under the theme “Maritime Governance under Changing Dynamics”. The session was moderated by Prof. Quentin Hanich, Fisheries Governance Programme at Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS).

In keeping with the conference's central theme of ‘Maritime Outlook of the Indian Ocean under Changing Dynamics’, the forum enabled a productive, high-level discussion. These conversations yielded critical insights and practical strategies to tackle stakeholders' primary concerns.

In the session, Dr. Rafael Prado Nippon Foundation Lecturer on Global Ocean Governance, IMO IMLI presented a paper on Responding to IUU Fishing in the Indian Ocean: Sustainable Practices and Marine Environmental Stewardship amid Shifting Geopolitical and Climatic Dynamics. Mr. Vijay D Chafekar, Executive Director, ReCAAP ISC & Former Additional Director General of Indian Coast Guard (Retd) focused on Harnessing Emerging Technologies to Combat Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships. Moreover, Mr. Vikum de Abrew, Additional Solicitor General & President’s Counsel, Attorney General's Department – SL shared insights on presented examined how Disparities in National Laws and Law Enforcement Mechanisms Creating Inconsistencies in Response Mechanisms. Finally, Major General Suzanne Puanani Vares-Lum (Retd.) Director, Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies presented a paper on The Dynamic Strategic Environment in the Indian Ocean and Partnering to Deter.
