VNF marks end of Annual Training Camp with inspection of divisions

Marking the conclusion of its Annual Training Camp, the Volunteer Naval Force (VNF) Headquarters held the ceremonial inspection of divisions on 02 Oct 25. The event was graced by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Damian Fernando as the Chief Guest, at the invitation of the Commandant VNF, Rear Admiral HNS Perera and Commanding Officer VNF, Commander Anura Karunarathna.

The Annual Training Camp and inspection of divisions, a longstanding tradition of the Volunteer Naval Force, play a vital role in strengthening the professional competence of its personnel. This year’s camp, which commenced on 16 September, brought together 47 officers and 493 junior and senior sailors.

The three-week annual training camp featured a series of programmes aimed at enhancing the theoretical and practical knowledge essential for naval duties. Marking the conclusion of the 2025 training camp, the Chief of Staff, on behalf of the Commander of the Navy, carried out the customary inspection of divisions. The proceedings were followed by a smart parade and a vibrant cultural display, bringing the event to a dignified close.

Speaking at the occasion, Rear Admiral Damian Fernando underscored that the VNF Annual Training Camp and inspection of divisions represent a long-standing and distinctive tradition. Reflecting on the growth of the Volunteer Naval Force, he noted that it has expanded from an initial strength of 24 officers and 121 sailors to 371 officers and 10,081 sailors, responding to the evolving needs of national security and development. He further highlighted the Volunteer Navy’s professional contributions across multiple fields, reinforcing the Navy’s overarching mission.

The Chief Guest also praised the VNF personnel for bringing pride to the nation through sporting achievements and technical expertise, while underscoring the importance of the training camp in shaping disciplined and skillful personnel. Paying tribute of the Navy, he remembered all VNF members who made the supreme sacrifice and wounded in the service of the nation, and extended deep respect to their families.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Ruwan Kalubowila, Director Generals, flag rank officers, senior officers from the Navy Headquarters and Western Naval Command, former Commanding Officers of VNF and sailors.
