Island-wide tree planting campaign takes root in view of 75th anniversary of Sri Lanka Navy
In a significant stride towards environmental conservation and in view of its forthcoming 75th anniversary (09 December), the Sri Lanka Navy has launched a number of eco-friendly initiatives. The tree planting campaign of these initiatives was inaugurated at the Galle Face on 25 Oct 25, under the distinguished patronage of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda.
On the directives of the Commander of the Navy, the tree planting programme is underway across all Naval Commands. The initiative focuses on introducing native species to strengthen local ecosystems in coastal, lagoon and inland areas, with execution overseen by respective Area Commanders.
Accordingly, the Eastern, Northern, North Central, Western, Southeastern and Northwestern Naval Commands conducted these tree planting programmes. The events saw planting of tree saplings with environmental and economic value, such as coconut, guava, mango, lime, Arjun (Kumbuk), margosa (Kohomba) etc., ensuring a unified and impactful naval contribution to the green environment.
As a principal partner in the Presidential Task Force for the Clean Sri Lanka national programme, the Navy is spearheading a series of green initiatives. This special tree planting project, launched in conjunction with the 75th anniversary, aims to enhance the resilience and sustainability of the country's vital ecosystems for generations to come.
