Navy provides diving support for flood-damaged water infrastructure

In the wake of recent severe weather, the Sri Lanka Navy has worked out a comprehensive, island-wide programme for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), delivering essential services to affected communities.

As part of these dedicated efforts, the Navy has deployed specialized diving teams to conduct urgent underwater repairs at key water treatment facilities, at Gatambe water treatment plant in Peradeniya and Mahiyanganaya water treatment plant.

Responding to requests from the Uva and Central Provincial Water Supply Boards, the Navy dispatched two skilled diving teams, each comprising five personnel. These divers were tasked with addressing critical damage at the Mahiyanganaya and Gatambe water treatment plants, where vital water pumps were submerged, inoperative, and clogged with silt and debris due to elevated water levels.

The Navy divers executed precise underwater operations to clear obstructions, perform maintenance, and facilitate the operation of pumping mechanisms of Mahiyanganaya water treatment plant yesterday (02 December) and underwater operations at Gatembe water treatment plant are currently underway.
