Navy continues island-wide relief efforts
The Sri Lanka Navy on 05 Dec 25 conducted extensive humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations across multiple districts, continuing its dedicated programme to support citizens affected by recent severe weather. Working in the districts of Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, Badulla, and Mullaitivu, naval personnel executed a wide range of tasks to restore infrastructure, provide essential services, and aid in community recovery.
A key focus was on restoring access to clean water, with the Navy cleaning a total of 70 drinking water wells contaminated by floods, including 51 wells in the Madampe area and 19 in the Anuradhapura district.
Efforts to clear and repair vital infrastructure involved removing debris from the Lewella Bridge in Kandy, clearing landslides on Hanthana and Hatale roads, and cleaning the Nillambe road in Peradeniya. The Navy also rehabilitated key public facilities, cleaning the Water Board Office in Ma Oya, Nazriya School in Chilaw, Sippikalana School, the Sama Viharaya, and the Uthuru Ariyagama Sri Purwaramaya, while also repairing a bridge in Kudirippu, Pesale, and cleaning an Elders’ Home in the Pesale area of Talaimannar.
Further supporting relief logistics, naval teams assisted in packing dry ration packs for the Kandy and Thalathuoya Divisional Secretariats and distributed dry rations in the Kotmale area. The Navy also provided specialized support, including diving assistance to facilitate repairs on the Peradeniya Railway Bridge and operating safe transportation for people across the Nayaru Lagoon in Mullaitivu, where the existing bridge has been damaged.
Furthermore, the Navy has delivered 21,046 meal parcels to disaster-affected communities through mobile kitchens operating in Meethotamulla, Anuradhapura and Arachchikattuwa, as of 05 Dec 25. In addition, the Navy has supplied 27,200 litres of drinking water to residents in Theldeniya, Arachchikattuwa, Rajanganaya and Gelioya using mobile Reverse Osmosis plants and water bowsers.
