Navy takes lead with officials and fishing communities in north to address fishing-related issues
The Northern Naval Command conducted an awareness programme and discussion on 10 Mar 26 at SLNS Uttara, to address pressing fishing-related issues in the Northern Province. This programme which builds upon previous efforts of a similar nature, was led by the Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Buddhika Liyanagamage.
The discussion focused on challenges faced by fishermen, illegal fishing practices, smuggling, regulatory matters, and the importance of sustainable fishing to protect marine resources. Participants emphasized the need for close cooperation among the Navy, Coast Guard, Police, Fisheries Department, and fishing societies to ensure a safe and productive fishing environment. The fishing community expressed appreciation for the continued efforts of the Navy and Coast Guard in safeguarding the fisheries sector.
Upon spotting the distressed animal within the naval base perimeters, naval personnel promptly notified the Ampara Department of Wildlife Conservation office. Following that, the Navy provided necessary support to the wildlife medical team, ensuring they could administer the required treatment to the elephant.
