Commander of the Navy recognizes humanitarian grit of naval personnel during Cyclone ‘Ditwah’

In a ceremony held on 08 May 26 at the Navy Headquarters, the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, recognized the selfless dedication of naval personnel who played a key role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations during the devastation caused by Cyclone ‘Ditwah’.

Following the severe weather conditions that struck the island on 28 Nov 25, the Sri Lanka Navy launched an extensive, island-wide operation across all Naval Commands, transcending routine duties to fulfill a vital national responsibility in safeguarding the lives of citizens and restoring normalcy to affected regions.

The Navy’s swift intervention resulted in the rescue of 1,378 individuals from life-threatening situations, while another 31,196 people were evacuated from high-risk zones to designated safe shelters. Beyond immediate rescue, the Navy ensured the provision of hygienically prepared meals and clean drinking water to those displaced. In the aftermath of the flooding, specialized naval diving teams played a critical role in post-disaster recovery by clearing contaminated water sources and providing essential underwater technical support to repair and maintain water pumps at various treatment plants that had been rendered inoperable.

A particularly standout moment of the relief effort was the daring rescue operation involving a passenger bus caught in the turbulent currents of the Kala Oya. This high-stakes mission, where naval personnel risked their lives against raging waters, received special commendation for its bravery and precision.

Addressing the gathering of naval personnel who demonstrated such immense commitment, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda emphasized that the Sri Lanka Navy remains perpetually prepared to meet any challenge with the highest level of professionalism. He highlighted that the Navy’s ability to achieve national objectives during such trying times is rooted in the collective spirit, unwavering determination, and the seamless teamwork of its members.

This recognition took the form of certificate presentation, serving as a formal acknowledgement to the unwavering commitment demonstrated by those naval personnel. Concurrent with this central event, similar programme were organized across other Naval Commands under the patronage of the respective Area Commanders.
