Navy steps up marine conservation under ocean and coastal sustainability endeavours
As part of its steadfast commitment to preserving the country's marine environment, the Sri Lanka Navy conducted another segment of its hallmark "Green and Blue Domain" and Clean Sri Lanka initiative at the Naval Dockyard in Trincomalee on 19 May 26. This programme marked another milestone in the Navy's dedication to ecological preservation and coastal sustainability endeavours.
During the programme, Mr. Thushan Kapurusinghe, a renowned marine biologist, environmentalist, and Chairman of the Turtle Conservation Project, shared invaluable insights on sea turtle conservation, mangrove restoration, and the protection of delicate coastal ecosystems, while providing practical methodologies to implement these strategies effectively.
Moving beyond classroom learning, the participants actively surveyed the beaches within the Naval Dockyard premises to monitor active sea turtle nesting sites and evaluate ongoing conservation efforts. Additionally, the team engaged in identifying ideal locations for future mangrove cultivation, mapping out essential steps for local ecological rehabilitation.
The successful execution of this programme further underscores the Sri Lanka Navy's enduring dedication to rehabilitating coastal ecosystems and safeguarding marine biodiversity for future generations.
