16 Aug 2026

A search and rescue operation has been launched by the Navy after a passenger craft capsized in the Nagadeepa sea area this evening (16 August 2026). The craft was carrying 8 passengers and 2 boat operators on board.

Reportedly, the craft departed Kurikadduwan jetty this evening around 3.20 p.m., but failed to reach its destination at Delft, prompting authorities to initiate inquiries.

Upon receipt of the distress, the Navy promptly launched a search and rescue operation for the missing boat, deployed despite advisories warning against venturing out in rough sea conditions.

Meanwhile, all the passengers and boat operators from the craft have managed to swim to Nagadeepa Island, following the boat capsize.

The Navy coordinated the transfer of the distressed individuals from Nagadeepa to Jaffna Hospital for further medical attention.
