Sri Lanka Navy has initiated a rescue and assistance operation for an Indian fishing trawler (IND.TN.10.MM.9381) that ran aground on a reef South off Delft Island in Sri Lankan waters early this morning 06 August 2026.

The trawler had reportedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) into Sri Lankan waters and engaged in bottom trawling before it had run aground.

Approximately 11 Indian fishermen are aboard the trawler. Due to the impact of grounding on the reef, the trawler has sustained partial structural damage.

However, the situation has not reached a critical stage and the fishermen are not in immediate danger. Sri Lanka Navy units have been dispatched to the location to safely rescue the fishermen.

Subsequent action pertaining to the incident is presently being pursued in conformity with the relevant legal procedures.
