Navy brings ailing fisherman ashore for urgent treatment

06 Nov 2026

A fisherman aboard a local multi-day fishing trawler, who became critically ill after falling overboard and being recovered while engaged in fishing in the eastern seas off Trincomalee, was promptly brought ashore by the Sri Lanka Navy today, 6 November 2026. The evacuation was coordinated by the Colombo Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, and he was subsequently rushed to the Trincomalee General Hospital for further treatment.

The multi-day fishing trawler 'Krishan Putha' (IMUL-A-0831 TLE) departed the Kudawella fisheries harbour on 29 October for fishing activities and was approximately 54 nautical miles off Boulder Point, Trincomalee, when one of its fishermen suddenly fell overboard and was subsequently recovered.

Owing to complications that arose in the fisherman, and following a notification from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to the MRCC Colombo requesting assistance to bring him ashore for urgent medical treatment, the Sri Lanka Navy deployed Fast Attack Craft P 474 of the Eastern Naval Command.

After the ailing fisherman was taken aboard the naval craft, basic first aid was administered and he was brought swiftly to the Trincomalee Harbour and rushed to the Trincomalee General Hospital for medical attention.

Through the coordination of the MRCC Colombo, the Sri Lanka Navy remains prepared to provide prompt relief to the maritime and fishing communities in distress within Sri Lanka's search and rescue region.
