Navy nabs 47 persons over illegal fishing activities

The Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 47 persons for engaging in illegal fishing during operations conducted in coastal areas between 17 and 31 October 2026. The operations also resulted in the seizure of 11 dinghies and 2 traditional boats.

The operations were carried out by the Eastern, Northern and North Central Naval Commands across coastal and beach areas, including Irakkandi, Karayaweli, Kattankudy, Mankadu, Saukkadi, Jayanagar, Jinnapuram, Sallikovil, Foul Point, Chapel Point, Flag Staff and Boulder Point in Trincomalee; Kankasanthurei in Jaffna; Veddithalativu and Mullaitivu.

The individuals, fishing boats and unauthorised fishing gear seized during the operations were handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources officials in Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Valaichchenai, Kuchchaveli, Cod Bay, Jaffna, Mailadi and Mannar for further legal action.
