Navy seizes approx. 336kg of smuggled Kendu leaves

The Sri Lanka Navy seized approx. 336 kg of Kendu leaves smuggled into the country during a search operation conducted in the Keerimundalama beach area of Kalpitiya on 2 October 2026.

During the operation, naval personnel from SLNS Vijaya of the Northwestern Naval Command searched 22 suspicious sacks found in the Keerimundalama beach vicinity. The sacks were found to contain approx. 336kg of Kendu leaves, which are suspected to have been abandoned by smugglers due to heightened naval surveillance in the area.

The seized consignment of Kendu leaves was handed over to the Kalpitiya Police for onward legal proceedings.
