Two suspects apprehended with ambergris in Mannar

The Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 2 suspects and seized over 67kg of ambergris during a search operation conducted in the South Bar beach area of Mannar on 11 September 2026. Commercial trade of the substance is banned under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Gajaba of the North Central Naval Command intercepted the consignment, which is believed to have been illegally collected and prepared for transport.

The suspects have been identified as residents of Mannar, aged 25 and 36. The Navy handed over the suspects and the seized ambergris to the Mannar Wildlife Conservation Department office for further legal action.
