Navy Saves Sea Turtle’s Life

Naval troops attached to SLNS Welusumana of the Northern Naval Command on information received saved the life of a sea turtle, which had been illegally caught, on 10th February 2014. The turtle weighing approximately 40 kilograms had been alive and it was being transported ashore for sale, having made immovable by tying it with nylon wire, when the naval troops intercepted the boat in the Mandativu Lagoon.

The turtle, the fishing boat along with the fishing gear used to commit the illegal act and the boat owner were handed over to Kayts Police for legal action. On a court order issued by Kayts Magistrate Court, officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Jaffna had taken action to release the sea turtle to sea.
