Navy deployed on Flood Relief Duties in Kalutara District

In response to the floods affecting the several areas in the Kalutara district due to the prevailing adverse weather condition, Sri Lanka Navy has deployed its Rapid Response Rescue and Release Squadron personnel on flood relief duties to render assistance to the people affected.

Ten Naval teams with inflatable rescue boats (IRBs) are continuing their rescue assistance in liaison with respective Government officials in the Kalutara district. Naval personnel are engaged in evacuation of people from trapped homes and buildings, ferrying the people to safe places.

The Navy is monitoring the flood situation and 16 additional rescue teams are stand-by in the Southern and Western Naval Areas for emergency deployments.

The Navy's Rapid Response Rescue and Release Squadron (4Rs) is a specialized unit set up to provide life saving and relief assistance during natural disasters. The squadron consists of naval personnel specialized in disaster management and craft especially designed for its operations. They are stationed on a location close to the affected area and therefore SLN was able to deploy them swiftly on the relief and rescue operations.
