SLN rescues Indian Fishing Trawler in distress in Sri Lankan Waters

Sri Lanka Navy rescued an Indian fishing trawler in distress in the Sri Lankan waters 11 nautical miles north-west of Thalai-mannar on 01st June 2014. The trawler had developed an engine defect and also begun to take in water due to a crack in the bottom of the hull, putting the lives of the 04-member Indian fishing crew in peril. Naval craft attached to the North Central Naval Command on routine patrol sighting the trawler in distress rendered prompt assistance. The trawler was rescued with the Indian crew and brought ashore for further assistance.

Technical assistance was provided for the repair of the defective fishing trawler and the crew was provided with food and accommodation.

On many occasions, Sri Lanka Navy has rescued Indian fishermen in distress on humanitarian grounds. SLN has provided them with assistance using its vessels and personnel despite the heavy expenses incurred in the process. Grateful Indian fishermen have expressed their gratitude for the provision of swift rescue, technical and salvaging assistance whenever they are in distress
