Navy arrests 10 persons for illegal fishing
 
 

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Walagamba of the Eastern Naval Command arrested 06 persons on the suspicion of illegal fishing in two separate incidents on 09^th and 10^th June 2015. Four persons were taken into custody in the Poduwakattu Beach Area on 09^th with a pair of diving fins, a diving mask, a snorkel and an underwater gun. Two persons were arrested at Sallimune in Jaynagar on 10^th with a catch of illegally harvested 20 kilograms of sea cucumber. Two diving masks, 02 diving snorkels, 02 pairs of diving fins and 02 torches were also taken into custody during the arrest. All six persons along with the items were handed over to Kuchchaweli Police for further investigations.

Meanwhile, naval personnel attached to SLNS Gotabaya of the same Naval Command also took into custody 04 persons with 07 illegal fishing nets in Nandikadal lagoon on 10^th June 2015. The arrest was made with the assistance of the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Mullativu). The arrested persons with the items were handed over to the office of the ADFAR (Mullativu) for further action.
